Salt is the all-purpose seasoning, so why not the all-purpose pharmaceutical too? Using the drug-laced water supply of San Jose and evaporating out all the water, artists Jon Cohrs and Morgan Levy create All-Salt, an all-purpose medicine for just about anything that ails you, all without having to go see a doctor for a prescription! Why didn't we think of that -- all the drugs in our water supply being wasted on mutating frogs and fish, and we could be recycling it and trimming the cost from our health care bills! Check out a video of the new concept after the jump.
From the artists:
Are you feeling depressed? Sick of paying exorbitant rates for birth control? Try Alviso's Medicinal All-Salt, harvested locally in San Jose.
Traditionally, medical conditions are treated through expensive appointments and prescription drugs. Alviso's Medicinal All-Salt is a unique low-dosage cocktail of our most commonly used drugs, all brought together in one simple salty remedy, naturally.
Our process harvests two popular commodities, sea salt and recycled pharmaceuticals from water treatment plants, to produce one fine medicinal product: Alviso's Medicinal All-Salt. A salt for every condition, hand harvested and sun dried for purity.
There's even a mock Instructables project page for how to make it yourself.
In their fake product page FAQ, the artists write:
Every area's water has its own special pharmaceutical make-up. We encourage you to contact your local wastewater treatment plant and ask about the pharmaceuticals found in your local wastewater, so you can harvest your own local flavors!
TIP: Wastewater treatment plants that serve retirement-age communities are especially valuable in that the elderly consume (and therefore excrete) pharmaceuticals at a greater rate than the general population.
Nothing like taking a highly problematic issue and wringing the humor out of it in the form of bottled salt. The artists make a rather serious point, however, about the levels of drugs found in San Jose, California water -- which could be just about Anytown, USA -- and cite much more serious information about the problems of pharmaceuticals in water supplies.
