We love maps around here, that's no secret. And we also love us some cool apps that help us explore the world. That's why the new map app from National Geographic is a tool after our own hearts, letting us explore the globe using several different map styles, including satellite with zoom capability.
For map freaks (like quite a few of us TreeHuggers), the NatGeo description of the app sounds luxurious: "Unlike other atlas applications, the National Geographic World Atlas utilizes our highest resolution, "press-ready" images, providing you the same rich detail, accuracy, and artistic beauty found in our award-winning wall maps and bound atlases."

The $1.99 app lets you peruse maps in three different styles (I like the one that looks like my elementary school globe), look at places that have appeared in the news using the built-in search tool, mark your favorite places, zoom in close enough to see your own home, and even add your own photos.

You can just imagine how great these maps will look on the larger Apple Tablet set to debut today, rather than the smaller screen of an iPhone. Niiiiice.
