One very simple booth caught my attention in the Sustainable Planet section. At first I thought it was yet another carbon tracking system for companies. But this is something completely different - something that has the potential to significantly change the way companies interact with their supply chains.
And Planet Metrics is demonstrating it on CES itself. In a nutshell, Planet Metrics has pulled together in one large database all the energy and environmental information available on just about any product you can think of. A company, such as a major retailer like Target or Wal-Mart, can enter in every company they purchase products from.
A simple chart is generated that illustrates what they're selling the most of, and how carbon intensive the products are. Green means not too carbon intensive, highly intensive products show up as red, and gray is somewhere in between.
The company can then look at this chart and quickly know which suppliers they need to have a chat with about making their products less carbon intensive, or if they even want to continue stocking that particular item.
This can help companies quickly and easily figure out what changes they need to make to green up themselves via their suppliers.
More detailed information about the software can be found at Planet Metrics. And what's very neat is they offered to do CEA's entire CES tradeshow carbon metrics. It'd be very interesting to see what/if CES does with the information for next year's show.
