Which U.S. states have the best and worst drivers?

Map of best and worst drivers in USA

Dangerous roads discourage people from biking...

The map above was created by Car Insurance Companion based on National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) data. It compiles various law enforcement metrics like "fatality rate" (per 100 million vehicle miles traveled), "failure to obey citations issued" (traffic signals and seat belts), "drunk driving citations" (self explanatory), "number of tickets issued", and "careless driving citations".

When you mash all that together, you get a pretty good idea of how good and bad drivers are in a state on average. It doesn't mean that there aren't some very safe drivers in the lowest-ranked states and vice versa, though, so don't take it personally if your state does poorly.

According to the data, here are the most dangerous drivers (cyclists beware!):

  1. Louisiana
  2. South Carolina
  3. Mississippi
  4. Texas
  5. Alabama
  6. Florida
  7. Missouri
  8. North Carolina
  9. Montana
  10. North Dakota

And here are the safest:

  1. Vermont
  2. Utah
  3. New Hampshire
  4. Minnesota
  5. Oregon
  6. Maine
  7. Connecticut
  8. District of Columbia
  9. Iowa
  10. Massachusetts
