Volkswagen hasn't been the most enthusiastic company when it comes to electric vehicles, at least so far. But they are throwing their hat into the ring with not one, but two production models: the 2015 e-Golf and the 2015 e-up!. We had already seen a natural gas version of the VW up! and knew the VW e-Golf would come at some point (originally planned for late 2013 as a 2014 model...), but we now have details.
2015 VW e-GolfThe 2015 VW e-Golf, shown above, looks a lot like the regular Golf, but under the hood is a 85 kW/ 115 PS electric motor that can rev up to 12,000-RPM and deliver 270 Nm of torque. Energy is stored in a 24.2 kWh lithium-ion battery made up of 264 individual cells (adding up to 323-volt). Like in many other EVs, the transmission is single-speed.
VW says that the driving range is between 130 and 190 km (81 and 118 miles), depending on driving conditions. Energy efficiency is 12.7 kW/100 km.
It's a very aerodynamic vehicle: "Whereas on the standard Golf (1.6 TDI with 77 kW) air drag is 0.686 m², the company was able to reduce this to 0.615 m² on the e-Golf, thus improving it by 10%. Similarly, the cD value was improved to 0.281."
The e-Golf should come to North-America in early 2015, but unfortunately we don't yet have details on pricing, production numbers, or which markets will get it first (California's probably a safe bet).
2015 VW e-up!The VW e-up! is like the small brother of the e-Golf. It's smaller, with a smaller electric motor that generates 60 kW / 82 PS of power and 210 Nm of torque, and a smaller lithium-ion battery that can store 18.7 kWh. The smaller size and weight combined with good aerodynamics make it use only 11.7 kWh per 100 km, with a driving range of between 120 and 160 km (75 to 99 miles), depending on driving conditions.

No word yet on whether the e-up! will come to North-America, but it does look a bit more like a vehicle for the European and Asian markets.
