Praying For A Bailout: The Lithium Calf On Detroit's Altar

Adoration of the Golden Calf

Having been raised Catholic, I had often been schooled about the dangers of idol worship: the 'Golden Calf' in particular. So, a recent report of SUV's inside a Detroit Michigan-area church was, at first, a bit alarming...even if they were hybrid SUVs.

With sport-utility vehicles at the altar and auto workers in the pews, one of Detroit's largest churches on Sunday offered up prayers for Congress to bail out the struggling auto industry...Local car dealerships donated three hybrid SUVs to be displayed during the service, one from each of the Big Three. A Ford Escape, Chevy Tahoe from GM and a Chrysler Aspen were parked just in front of the choir and behind the pulpit.
Via:Reuters, SUVs at altar, Detroit church prays for a bailout But the altar belongs to all of us.It occurred to me a bit later, however, that the prospect of a successful GM Volt, a lithium-powered calf we have blogged about adoringly, is held hostage by the insolvency crisis (lithium is the metal critical to extended battery powered range and fast recharge for most plug-in hybrids). At risk, are important designs for a greener transportation future, as well as the jobs of Detroit-area auto workers.
