J1772 Standard for Charging Electric Cars Should be Adopted Soon

Society of Automotive Engineers Set to Vote this Week

It's been over two years, but the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) seems like it's about to agree on a standard for charging electric cars and plug-in hybrids. The name is "SAE Surface Vehicle Recommended Practice J1772, SAE Electric Vehicle Conductive Charge Coupler", or J1772 in short. If the standard passes a vote this week, it could become adopted and official in about 10 weeks. So what's the connector like?

"The current revision of SAE J1772 (as of October 2009), informally referred to as SAE J1772-2009, is based on a connector design from Yazaki and allows for an increased power delivery of up to 16.8kW delivered via single phase 120-240V AC at up to 70 amps. [...]

The round 43 mm diameter connector has five pins and will support communication over power lines, to identify the vehicle and control charging. The connector is designed to withstand up to 10,000 connection/disconnection cycles and exposure to all kinds of elements. Approximating one connection/disconnection cycle daily, the average connector's lifespan should be just over 27 years." (source)

This sounds pretty good. Once everybody is using the same connectors, what will matter most for electric car and plug-in hybrid owners will be how "smart" the chargers & cars will be; for example, you could set it to charge only certain times of the day or night, or to communicate with a smart meter to only charge when electricity is at a certain rate, or only when there's a surplus of renewable energy on the grid, or to charge in a way that extends the life of your battery pack as much as possible, etc.
