Fully Charged Takes Renault's Freaky, Lightweight Twizy for a Spin

Bonnie reported on rumors about the Renault Twizy way back in 2009, but it's all been a bit quiet since then. Yet given Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn's very public commitment to electric vehicle technology, it's no surprize that the Renault Twizy looks set to make waves.

In the latest episode of Fully Charged, an even-more-enthusiastic-than-normal Robert Llewellyn takes the Twizy for a long drive in Ibiza and clearly gets a little giddy. Sure, it's only a two seater. Yes, the fact it has no windows means it probably won't take off in Northern Scotland. But the point about this car is that it is super lightweight, cheap, fun and easy to drive. It's the ideal car for urbanites in warmer climates, and it makes for a great addition to any car sharing fleet.

As Llewellyn points out, it may be exactly the same things that mark the Twizy out from a conventional car that make it a success. This is, potentially, disruptive technology that can help shift how we see cars and what we use them for. (Technically the Twizy is a quadracycle, not a car.) At €6,990 plus a €50 per month lease, it seems like this could take off among a significant portion of the population. At least if they have as much fun as Mr Llewellyn clearly did...
