Other Automakers Will Have to At Least Match It

GM seems pretty confident that the Chevy Volt's battery pack, which is based on LG Chem cells but is packaged by GM, will last a long time without too many problems. It has just announced that it will be offering a standard warranty of 8 years or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first) covering the all of the 161 battery components. Read on for more details.

How Long Will the Volt's 16-kWh Battery Last?

GM writes:

GM engineers have completed more than 1 million miles and 4 million hours of validation testing of Volt battery packs since 2007, as well as each pack's [161 battery components,] nine modules and 288 cells. The development, validation and test teams have met thousands of specifications and validated each of the Volt battery's components.

Tests include short circuit, corrosion, dust, impact, water submersion, crush and penetration, and extreme temperature swings combined with aggressive drive cycles, also known as "Shake, Bake and Roll."

Good News for EV Drivers

This probably means that other automakers will at least have to match this warranty on their electric cars and plug-in hybrids, if not beat it. This can only be good for early adopters, making it less risky to be the first person on your block to have an electric car or PHEV.

This, plus Nissan's "anchoring" of the price of EVs at a fairly low point means that the EV & PHEV transition might happen faster than some thought if (and it's a big "if") the vehicles can perform well in the real-world and keep incrementally improving at a decent pace over the next few years.
