It was 2005 when we last reported on Australia's pioneering car share business GoGet. The guys have been going places since then, figuring that their service now keeps the equivalent of more than 230 cars off the road, through their more than 26 car share pods in four states (though we suspect these stats may be out of date). Membership is said to going at 200% a year and it may jump with their latest innovation.

GoGet have just unveiled Australia's first public electric car charge station, which will power up a plug-in Toyota Prius hybrid at a car share pod, but a stones throw from the central business district of Sydney, NSW. The charge station with have the Prius ready to head out again in about three hours and will provide it with a range of 30 kilometres (19 miles). This is apparently 2km longer than 80% of regular GoGet trips. The charge station was installed by telecommunications company, Visionstream, and will managed by electric mobility firm, ChargePoint.

Clover Moore, Sydney's Lord Mayor opened the station and noted that the City of Sydney is investigating the purchase of retrofitted plug-in Hybrid EVs and new EVs for its vehicle fleet, as part of its goal to reduce carbon emissions by 70% from 2006 levels by 2030.

OnlySydney also have Ms Moore observing that, "Each day more than 700,000 cars travel throughout the Sydney Local Government Area, significantly contributing to smog, greenhouse gas pollution, congestion and noise." Additionally they report that there are about 3,000 individual car share members within the City of Sydney area, (the majority with GoGet), including 500 small businesses. And the City provides 120 dedicated on-street car share spaces, which is said to be four times more than any other Australian city.

This unveiling will no doubt spur on the work of Better Place, the other main contender for a electric vehicle charging network in Australia.
