More Choices Than EverOne of the main benefits of electric cars is that they take advantage of the fact that most vehicles are parked all night and most of the day. This means that if you have a way to charge where you park (at home, at the office, in the parking lot of businesses, etc), you can drive off with a full charge almost all the time. This is a completely different dynamic from gas and diesel vehicles, and it does a lot to mitigate the shorter driving range of EVs (for now -- batteries improve every year), and for longer distances, super-fast public charging stations are already starting to be built (including the amazing free-to-use Supercharger network by Tesla). Things are moving so fast that charging equipment makers forecast a growth of 10X over the next 8 years.
From 5 Models to 30What does this mean for you? Well, if you have or are considering buying a plug-in vehicle, things are getting better all the time on the charging side; more models are available, prices are bound to go down because of the competition and production volume, and the technology is getting more convenient and user-friendly all the time (lots of charging smartphone apps, for example). As the nice folks over at GreenCarReports pointed out, Home Depot now sells 30 different models of EV chargers online, up from 5 models a year ago.
Some models are perfect for a home garage, others are built for outside use and can charge multiple EVs at the same time. It all depends on your needs. Just make sure to read all the technical specifications to make sure that it's really what you want.
