One place most of us can conserve water at home is in the bathroom, which is the largest source of indoor water usage. Installing new, water-efficient fixtures can reduce consumption by 20%. Replacing leaking or inefficient bathroom faucets with WaterSense-certified models can save 700 gallons annually.

Not only can efficient sink fixtures help lower your water bill, but saving water helps the environment even if you're not in an area that suffers from drought. That's because tap water requires energy for treatment and delivery to your home, so using less saves those resources too.

We researched the market to find the best efficient faucets for your bathroom sink.

Final Verdict

Whether you’re looking for a contemporary or modern faucet, Moen’s Eva two-handle faucet will make a splash in your bathroom. Delta’s Porter two-handle model is a budget-friendly option that is designed with a high arc to allow for more space between the spout and your sink.

What to Look for in a Bathroom Faucet

The right faucet can make any bathroom sparkle. But how do you choose the right one for you? Budget is always a factor, whether you want the latest technological advances like sanitizing and motion activation. Here are some things to look consider.

Mount Type

Whether you’re replacing an existing faucet or buying a new one, you’ll want to ensure that the faucet you purchase matches the hole openings in your sink or countertop.

  • Single-hole faucets are ideal for small sinks or smaller bathrooms and combine the spout and handle (usually a single lever) and require one sinkhole.
  • Center-set faucets have three holes and have one or two handles mounted on a single plate.
  • Widespread mounts include three separate pieces—two handles and a spout with a standard distance of at least 8 inches. These are also sometimes called three-hole designs.
  • Wall mount faucets are best for freestanding or vessel-style sinks.

Finish

There’s a mind-blowing number of bathroom faucet finishes choosing from including old-school polished chrome to brushed chrome, brushed nickel, oil-rubbed bronze, black, and stainless steel.

Beyond looks, consider how much maintenance you want to do. For example, polished finishes are elegant and sparkly but require much more frequent wiping down to keep them looking their finest. Brushed finishes, on the other hand, tend to be better at hiding water spots and fingerprints.

Flow Rate

The Federal Energy Management Act of 1992 capped the flow rate of new faucet fixtures made in the United States at 2.5 gallons per minute (GMP). In order to qualify for a WaterSense seal, fixtures must have a water flow of 1.5 GPM or lower. The water savings are substantial, as are the costs saved to those who use them in their homes or office buildings. WaterSense models can save 700 gallons of water per year—or the amount of water needed to take 45 showers. Most manufacturers have WaterSense product lines, so you’ll have plenty of options to choose from.

Another benefit of the WaterSense label is that these faucets have been third-party tested for life cycle performance, meaning they'll continue to work well and deliver water savings for the duration of the product's expected lifetime.

Faucet Height

You'll want to consider the space between the mouth of the faucet and the bottom of the bowl of your sink. Make sure you have plenty of room to wash your hands, and consider if you need any additional space to fill up things like watering cans or humidifier tanks.

It's also good to consider the total height of the faucet before you buy, to make sure that it doesn't conflict with the doors of the medicine cabinet, shelving, or anything else above the sink.

Frequently Asked Questions
  • How does a water-efficient faucet save water?

Technological advancements in plumbing have helped lower the gallons per minute used. Faucet accessories, such as aerators that sit on the end of the faucet, help to lower flow rates to as little as 0.5 gallons per minute by allowing air into the water stream. Aerators also reduce spray and soften the water stream.

  • Are water-efficient faucets sanitary?

Yes. Some water-efficient faucets, like touchless models, may even help to reduce the spread of germs that live on faucet surfaces.
