It's like the "Help, I’m Trapped in a Fortune Cookie Factory" joke, but with a twist; the twist being that during the very unfunny Hurricane Harvey, four bakers were stuck inside a pan dulce bakery. But rather than pen secret missives on fortunes, they decided to spend the next two days madly baking the delicious Mexican sweet breads, to give to flood victims. According to their Facebook page, El Bolillo Bakery makes, "Probably the best pan dulce in town. Great selection and prices. Fresh tortillas, latin pastries, and even cakes." One thing's for sure: They have heroic bakers. The four bakers had been working the late shift when they discovered they could not leave because of flooded streets, reports The Independent. So instead of panicking, they got baking. Remarkably, the bakery had been spared flooding inside and the power remained on. "When they realised they were stuck, they decided to keep themselves busy and help the community and made as many loaves of bread as they could," Brian Alvarado, a bakery manager, told The Independent. "By the time the owner managed to get to them, they had made so much bread that we took the loaves to loads of emergency centres across the city for people affected by the floods," he added. "We didn't count exactly how many loaves they made, but they used 4,400 pounds of flour." There have just been so many incredible stories like this. From the obvious heroics of people rescuing those stranded in cars and flooded houses, to the quieter valient acts – like the group of people saving bats and this, a couple of guys stuck in a bakery and making the best of it ... restoring faith in humanity, one batch of pan dulce at a time.
