Autumn Spanne is an independent journalist, educator, and former newspaper reporter who writes about climate, biodiversity, and sustainability, as well as environmental health, justice, and policy, for a variety of online publications.
Autumn's stories have been featured in The Atlantic, National Geographic, The Guardian, Reveal, Scientific American, the Christian Science Monitor, InsideClimate News, Environmental Health News, and CNN, among other publications. She was a 2016-2017 Ted Scripps Fellow in Environmental Journalism at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and a 2006-2017 fellow of the Metcalf Institute for Environmental and Marine Reporting. She has written for Treehugger since 2021.
Previously, Autumn taught English and journalism on the Navajo Nation and later worked as an editor at Youth Communication, an award-winning educational publishing company in New York that trains young people in writing and journalism. She's also a longtime researcher for Environmental Health News and The Daily Climate and coordinator of EHN's Spanish language news section. Autumn has reported widely from the U.S., Europe, and Latin America. Originally from California, she also had the privilege to call both rural New Mexico and New York City home for many years. Autumn now lives in Barcelona.
Autumn holds an MS in Journalism from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, an MA in Education from Western New Mexico University, and a BA in Literature from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
