With parents everywhere desperate to make their child’s next birthday party the most meaningful one ever it’s no surprise that there comes a time when gifts just aren’t enough. In fact it’s probably well past that time indeed, and two fed-up moms are aiming to point us all in a new direction with ECHOage; an innovative online party planning tool that provides children and their parents with the opportunity to protect the environment while saving time and money in the process. Perhaps not surprisingly, co-founder Alison Smith declares that “ ECHOage is convenience and conscience wrapped up in a big green ribbon!”...

When you send the milk jug in your fridge on to the recycler, it’s often the last you’ll think of it. But Green Toys, Inc. is busy recycling them for profit into their line of classic children’s toys. And as they point out on their website, every pound of milk jugs recycled means an energy savings equivalent to 3,000 AAA batteries, three weeks worth of the electricity needed to power a TV or enough to run your laptop for the entire month ahead.
Not to mention the fact that they’ll also provide a great way to teach your kids about the positive benefits of recycling waste products into something fun.

H&M, the Swedish high street store, has yet again made it into the TreeHugger news, just on time to spread some love for Valentine's day (check out
Green Valentine for other great gifts). After
applying the EU eco-label and
the launch of their organic cotton collection last spring, H&M has launched
Fashion Against Aids to spread awareness about HIV this month. Well-known artists such as Rihanna, Chicks on Speed, Good Charlotte, Henrik Vibskov, Jade Jagger, Justice, Katharine Hamnett, My Chemical Romance, Rufus Wainwright, Scissor Sisters, The Cardigans, Tiga, Timbaland and Ziggy Marley have each designed a 100% organic cotton T-shirts, tank tops or hooded sweater. Judging by the sold out racks of clothing the first days of the launch (at least here in Barcelona), the campaign is a great success....

Grammy nominees this year will be treated to more than just expensive watches and exotic trips in those outrageous bags of swag. Amid all of the pre-partying and pampering going on at this year’s 50th Grammy Awards, green goods are making their way into the scene at
Green with Music ‘the first ever, all-green gifting retreat and Ayurvedic Spa’ for Grammy nominees, providing a green treat for all those artists brave enough to battle LA traffic. While checking out the green goods, attendees also got to people watch and mingle with celebs spotted in the crowd, including Omarosa, and the members of Evanescence (who liked it so much they came by both days).
The event was held February 8 & 9, 2008 in the lobby of
the South Collection building Elleven, the first and only LEED Gold certified, eco-chic residential building in California. Most of the green companies were based in Los Angeles and, interestingly enough, were predominantly companies that are relatively new. This gave great exposure to smaller, eco-friendly companies that are just getting their wings....

When toy industry veteran designer and parent Chris Clemmer got together with a couple of friends and realized there’s a mint to be made in eco-toys of one form or another they sat down and came up with Sprig Toys. A new line of kid-powered toys working to ensure traditional battery-powered toys go the way of the dinosaurs by harnessing all that pent up energy your child’s been carrying around....

F*&king Recycle is the latest poster collection by graphic designer
Becky Redman. Designed to increase awareness and promote action, the 50 colourful and provoking posters do exactly that. With encouraging messages to get people to recycle everything that can possibly be recycled (glass, aluminium, paper, cans, etc.) and notes such as ‘
one recycled aluminium can will save enough energy to power a television for three hours’, '
every eight months the UK produces enough waste to fill Lake Windermere’ or ‘
plastic can take up to 500 years to decompose’, this is a great collection of typographic exploration, using intense colours to spread alarming facts and get people to recycle. All posters have been screen printed on 100% recycled paper and posted in public.

It is the first of January, which means it’s time to leave the worn-out diary behind and open up a new one. If you haven’t found the perfect agenda to start this New Year yet, here are a few fun and practical eco options. From recycled to social and paperless, there’s an even wider range of treehugger-style diaries this year than any of the previous years.
Starting with the recycled options,
Kara suggested Scribesdelight journals that are made from recycled saddle leather. A
recycled saddle leather agenda/address book is available for $79. If you got one last year, just order your re-fill now and reuse the sleeve.

Another recycled option is the diary by
Bandaderodadura, a Spanish company. The sturdy black
sleeves of these diaries are made from recycled car tire inner tubes and are locally made in Barcelona. The sleeves come with a zip pocket for extra storage space and are guaranteed to last you through quite a few years.

Not so long ago I had the chance to check out a couple of cool gifts for kids this holiday season, and the Hydrogen Car available
through Discovery was definitely one of them.
Similar to the H-Racer, it combines a cool, futuristic look with fuel cell technology to teach kids of all ages about the benefits of clean technology development.
And while the car automatically avoids obstacles after bumping into them, the one real drawback is that it doesn’t go tremendously fast. So I suspect the eco-geek on your list may well enjoy it more than the kid who’s looking for the fastest machine in existence.

If you’re wondering what an inspired 12 year-old can do to help stop global warming, look no further than a 7th grader named Hunter Gross from Long Island, NY. He’s launched a project with his mom and dad dubbed
Project Kool, and it’s goal is to help get kids involved replacing the endless stream of paper and plastic bags they cart their lunch to school in each day by swapping ‘em for The Lunch Sak.
What’s
The Lunch Sak? Well, it’s a reusable lunch bag made of natural cotton that has a Velcro strip to make it resealable. For fun it comes with a pair of markers that wash out easily, making it possible for kids of all ages to redesign their Lunch Sak on a daily basis without harming the environment in the process.

Ever wonder how to turn your parents green? Well, author James Russell
set out to answer just that question, and in a most entertaining manner too I might add.
Meet the Greens and the Groans... The Greens being kids who get the problem of global warming and the general environmental mess we're in while the Groans (their parents) are busy causing most of the trouble without a world of care or an inch of interest in solving the problem.
Of course the book is quick to point out there's lots a kid can do...

With all the
excitement this year over lead in toys and the leaching of BPA from plastic cups and bottles, I thought it might be time to give some alternative, non-leaching sippy cups a review here on TH.
To pull it off properly I handed my requested samples over to a couple of local experts, my nephew Nick and niece Cailey. They gave models by both Sigg and Klean Kanteen the once over along with their mom Jodi without me around, and reported back with a kids-eye view.

Half Christmas card, half Christmas tree replacement (with tongue fully in cheek), UK-based designer
Alexander Glenn has created a fun flat-pack tree just in time for the festive holiday season. In the spirit of having a
Merry flat-packed Christmas and a
really flat-packed tree, the card goes from flat to fun with a few snips of the scissors and a quick assembly, leaving you plenty of time to make your officemates jealous before the big day (and speaking of: still not done buying gifts?
TreeHugger's Gift Guide is waiting...).
About the design, Glenn says it “looks at the throw-away society and mass consumerism especially around Christmas time. The idea of a flat-pack Christmas card reflected this idea and lent itself to Ikea’s furniture, while making it cheap to post too. Recipients can then build their own Christmas card, which is more interesting than a bit of folding card.”...
