For now, 4 demonstration dorm rooms at University of Virginia (UVA) are coming outfitted with snazzy, new green products, like green cleaning products, green school supplies and even electronics, reports The News Leader. The new products are also available for purchase in the campus store, but will the students choose them?Items like laundry detergent, binders, trash bags, and other cleaning supplies from Seventh Generation are being used in the demonstration rooms and are now available for purchase in the campus store. In addition, electronics like computers, fridges and microwaves by Cavalier are available for purchase. Each of them comes with a Energy Star rating of "silver" or "gold" for optimal energy efficiency. Typically outside vendors create the "demonstration" rooms to highlight products but the Bookstore and Housing Division decided to decorate the rooms themselves to promote green.

Incoming freshmen are being targeted by this new green program. The hope is that they will choose green products at the campus bookstore as they decorate their new rooms in what for many will be the first time they are living on their own. Several students interviewed said they will consider choosing the green products.

The four "demonstration" rooms now outfitted with green products can be found in Page and Lile houses through August 21. Last year, UVA created a Sustainability Office and hired several staff members. In addition, in 2008 the University won a $100,000 grant from Dominion Power to improve energy efficiency around campus and install energy monitoring systems in each of the 14 residence halls. :The News Leader
