Design doesn't have to have an expiry date or limited shelf life. For those who love the look of vintage hi-fi speakers, German Hamburg-based company Soundpauli is in the business of upgrading and updating old hi-fi speakers into something fresh, portable and suitable for today's multitude of music-playing devices.

Previously, we've seen recycled speakers as huge art installations, hidden in picture frames and even in cookie tins. But these customized speakers are aimed squarely at the audiophile looking for a mobile option.

Refurbished by hand and outfitted on the inside with newer sound technologies, each of Soundpauli's speakers are powered by six AA batteries to pump out sound for up to 40 hours. They come with fabric-wrapped cables topped with 3.5 mm jacks, a convenient carrying handle and a flip switch for power.

With a glut of speakers out there to choose from, Soundpauli's speakers have an unassuming yet distinctive, retro touch of class that give them an edge. Plus, the company can even upgrade an old favourite speaker of yours that's lying around. For more info, check out the rest on their online shop (in German).
