"A Better World by Design" Conference: Students Rethinking our Planet, Coming Soon
A group of Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design students have organized the second annual "A Better World by Design" Conference in Providence, Rhode Island. It's being held between both campuses which are in close proximity to each other from Friday, October 2nd to Sunday the 4th. The conference will focus heavily on design, integrative thinking, and social and environmental change, to excite professionals and students alike on the potential of ideas and collaboration across disciplines.Through the speaker sessions, panel discussions, hands-on workshops, and evening social events, the conference will link hundreds of enthusiastic, motivated young people with individuals and companies who have already made, and are continuing to make, their impact on the world. A key component of the conference is the important role design has to play in addressing some of our most pressing problems including climate change, slum living, and over-dependence on fossil fuels. Speakers include architects, industrial designers, engineers, artists, educators, authors, scientists, graphic designers and entrepreneurs.
The speaker list includes prolific individuals such as keynote speaker, Jan Chipchase, principal engineer at the Nokia Research Center, Michael Braungart, founder and partner of McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry and the Environmental Protection Encouragement Agency. Stefan Behnisch, principal and founder of Behnisch Architekten. Teddy Cruz, founder of Estudio Cruz and professor of urbanism at UC San Diego. William Drenttel, founder of Winterhouse Studio and Editor of Design Observer. Stuart Harshbarger, program manager and system integrator for Johns Hopkins University's Revolutionizing Prosthetics Program. Kigge Hvid, founder and CEO of INDEX. Jaime Lerner, the former governor of Parana, Brazil. Emeka Okafor, creator of TED Africa and founder of Maker Faire Africa. Emily Pilloton, founder and executive director of Project H Design. Nathan Shedroff, chair of California College of Arts' MBA in Design Strategy. These people and more represent the talented group of the amazing community which will be brought together A Better World by Design 09.
