In the Christmas carol 'Good King Wenceslas,' the king looks out and see snow all about. He also notices a poor man gathering winter fuel, though the frost be cruel. He sets out into the night to save the man from his plight. The carol concludes "be sure, wealth or rank possessing, ye who now will bless the poor, shall yourselves find blessing."

In this same vein, outdoor lifestyle clothing company, Horny Toad, of California are offering their customers a 15% discount when they donate gently pre-loved apparel to Goodwill secondhand clothing stores across the US. If Goodwill receive 100,000 pieces of donated clothing by the end of 2009 then Horny Toad will also donate $10,000 USD directly to Goodwill Industries International. It's a win-win-win-win. Horny Toad bolster their social entrepreneur status with their customer, and probably get new sales to boot. Customers get a warm and fuzzy feeling from donated unwanted clothes, their wardrobe gains some breathing space and they get a worthwhile discount off new goods. Even many of Horny Toad's clothing pieces are made from the likes of recycled polyester and/or organic cotton. Goodwill increase their income base by having greater quality stock to sell, This, in turn, helps them deliver services to those less fortunate. Those who have slipped off society's radar benefit from new clothes, but also from Goodwill's enhance ability to provide appropriate services.

When we last looked over 1,320 garments have been given to Goodwill, and umpteen folk had written about how it was such a great idea and how good they felt. Carol composer, John Mason Neale, certainly knew a thing or two more than 150 years ago, when he penned that carol's lyrics.

So if you are stateside clean out your wardrobe and drop any clothes, that are surplus to your needs, at a Goodwill store, whether you need the Horny Toad 15% discount or not.
