Wholearth by Danny Seo Body Wash and Body Lotion Do a Body Good, But Underwhelm

You can't unscrew an incandescent light bulb these days without running into one-man green machine Danny Seo. Brace yourself, because the multihyphenated eco-expert-author-blogger-columnist, who has aligned himself with marquee names like Better Homes & Gardens, Method, JC Penney, and Simmons, is now making a foray into your powder room with a collection of certified-organic bath and beauty products.
Debuting at select Anthropologie stores on Earth Day, Wholearth by Danny Seo is as conscientious about what it puts into its potions, lotions, and scrubs as what it leaves out—you won't find parabens, phthalates, propylene glycol, petrochemicals, synthetic dyes, or silicones in this lot. Still, the products I sampled lacked the same pizazz I've come to expect from Seo's endeavors. Aroma-wise, Wholearth hits all the right olfactory notes. The grapefruit, orange, lemon, and lime oils in the deliciously creamy Grateful Planet body wash filled my shower with an invigorating citrusy scent that cut through the morning, pre-caffeinated fog and gave me a tropical contact high—along with a tight, dry feeling post-rinse that brought me crashing back to reality. (Fumbling with the screw-top cap didn't help, either.)
And while the Grateful Planet body lotion, which slid on as smooth as silk, conjured visions of beachside piña coladas (complete with tiny paper umbrellas), the gel-like moisturizer dried to leave a less-than-luxurious tacky—sticky, that is, not sordid—feeling on my skin.
The skincare line does get kudos, however, for its use of 100 percent post-consumer recycled materials for its cartons, bottles, and jars. Now if it'd only work on its inner beauty, everything would be copacetic down in Cocomo.
