Tarte eyeQuatic Waterproof Summer Essentials is Sunny With Chance of Showers

Designed to allow you to get wet and wild by a pool or beneath the blistering summer sky without melting your face off—or, at least, ruining those gussied-up peepers of yours—Tarte's limited-edition eyeQuatic Waterproof Summer Essentials Kit is travel-sized and eminently portable for lash-batting prep work on the run.

Comprising three gemstone-inspired Lock & Roll Creaseless Cream & Powder Shadow Duos (citrine, turquoise, tanzanite) and Tarte's Lights, Camera, Splashes! 4-in-1 Waterproof Mascara, the eyeQuatic set is free of parabens, phthalates, petrochemicals, fragrances, dyes, glycols, or GMOs. It's not completely bereft of synthetic chemicals, however, including a few some may raise a well-coiffed eyebrow at. Tarte's Lock & Roll vitamin-infused eye shadows, for the uninitiated, offer a one-two punch of hyperpigmented, dramatic color: You apply the cream end on your lids using the built-in applicator brush, wait 10 seconds for it to dry, flip over the stick, and then roll on the matching loose shadow on top. In theory, the binding agents in the cream shadow will "lock" with the powder, resulting in a seamless, waterproof finish. It takes more than some modicum of skill to pull off, however, especially with the more lurid shades.

With caranuba wax and olive esters to smooth and soothe lashes, along with rice-bran wax for screen siren-worthy roll-out, the mascara lives up to its hype, lengthening, curling, volumizing and conditioning with panache. The results, even for my nubby lashes, were va-va-voom amazing, producing clearly defined, instantly full, well-separated curls with little clumping. And the mascara, like the eye shadows, held up heroically under test conditions: a copious amount of eye drops blinked away throughout the day.

More's the pity, then, that potentially toxic irritants like polybutene, cyclopentasiloxane, and phenoxyethanol rear their heads in the ingredients list. The acid-trip-like head scarf that rounds up the set is another environmental downer—it's made in China from 100 percent polyester.
