Pinkwash Free Zone: Best Eco-Friendly Beauty for Breast Cancer Research

This guest post was written by Rachel Lincoln Sarnoff of ecostiletto.

Seeing pink? It must be October, when the beauty industry slaps a whole bunch of pink ribbons on products that donate to breast cancer research. Sounds great, right? Not exactly, when many of these companies formulate their products with petro-chemically derived ingredients that are proven carcinogens, such as phthalates, parabens and synthetic fragrances, according to the No More Breast Cancer campaign.

Ah, the irony.Yes, we appreciate the millions of dollars in research that pink-ribbon cause marketing has funded. After all, with one out of eight American women at risk for cancer in her lifetime, who wants to look a gift horse's intentions in the mouth?

But we can't help being suspicious about the billions which that little ribbon has generated for the beauty industry as a whole. As Annie Leonard ever-so-aptly put it in her latest "Story of Stuff" installment, "Don't you think the best way for Estée Lauder to fight cancer is to stop using those chemicals in the first place?

Abso-fricken-lutely.

Newsflash: You can support breast cancer research without buying products that cause cancer in the first place. Plus, $1,200+ In giveaways!

ACURE ORGANICS ANTI-AGING SKINCARE SET, AVAILABLE AT SPIRIT BEAUTY LOUNGE, FOR THE BREAST CANCER RESEARCH FOUNDATION ($129)

Acure Organics is all about raising money for breast cancer research—Kristy Guerra founded the company in honor of her grandmother, who battled the disease for more than 10 years. This is a Big List-free line of fair trade, natural and certified organic products that are truly animal friendly (the only thing not vegan is beeswax in some). And while Acure donates $1 of each sale to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, eco-beauty ecommerce site Spirit Beauty Lounge will match it with each and every sale—making a $2 donation this month. We love Acure's Anti-Aging Skincare Set, which calls on potent anti-aging ingredients like Sea Kelp, Acai and Goji berry that really work—naturally.

JOSIE MARAN COSMETICS GOGO NATURAL VOLUME ARGAN MASCARA FOR CITY OF HOPE ($22)

In the past, we've written about how much we adore Josie Maran Cosmetics mascara—our editor, Rachel Lincoln Sarnoff, even chopped onions with the former supermodel to test out how it stands up to drips. When it comes to creating eco-mascara that lasts and lasts and lasts, there's no one with more experience—or enthusiasm—than Josie, who was the face of Maybelline for 10 years and once proclaimed she planned to sell a petrochemical-free mascara every two seconds (Maybelline apparently sells one of their green-and-pink paraben-filled numbers every five). Now Josie's upped the ante with her new GOGO (Give One, Get One—get it?) Volume Argan Mascara, which boasts a patented lash-coating delivery system that yields long wearing, clump-free, water-resistant definition. GOGO supports City of Hope, a leading cancer research, treatment and education institution. Through August 2012, for each GOGO sale, JMC will donate one mascara to the organization; after that date, $1 is donated from each sale—permanently. Where does Josie's commitment to eco-beauty and philanthropy come from? Maybe she's born with it.

We're crushing on new scents like the white-flower based Magik (think Kai, but without the sneezes) and rich, warm Rosé, created in partnership with Sommelier Katherine Marlowe. Plus, throughout October, A Perfume Organic will donate 20% of all purchases to Susan G. Komen for the Cure Breast Cancer Foundation. Sniff.

If you've been reading EcoStiletto for a while, you know how we feel about nail polish. Yes, something that you have to dispose of as hazardous waste—even when it's big-three free—is not something you want to be putting on your body on a regular basis. With that said, who are we to stand in the way of a woman's right to sport saucy nails once in a while—as long as the polish she uses is as low-toxin as possible? Free of camphor, formaldehyde, toluene & phthalate, vegan Dazzle Dry nail products fit the bill, and this cute kit—featuring a wear-everywhere shade of pink—donates 20% to the Susan G. Komen For The Cure Foundation.

GARDEN GIRL MAGIC EYE SERUM FOR THE SUSAN G. KOMEN FOR THE CURE FOUNDATION ($44)

We appreciate that Garden Girl products are free of parabens, sulfates, petroleum products and phthalates and we love that they use organic ingredients whenever possible. But it's their sustainable purchasing concept that really floats our boat: Buy a jar of one of their creams, and you can refill it—saving money and packaging—rather than recycling it and buying new. Plus, now through October 31st, all sales at Garden Girl online donate five percent to Susan G. Komen For The Cure, like this organic aloe, hyaluronic acid, peptide-filled, aptly named Magic Eye Serum, which tightens, firms, reduces fine lines and plumps like mad. Magic, indeed.

HEALING ANTHROPOLOGY REJUVENATING VITAMIN C SOLUTION FOR BREAST CANCER ACTION ($55)Images courtesy of ecostiletto

As the winner of the Beauty With A Conscience Award for Eco-Friendly Practices, Healing Anthropology takes is commitment to sustainability extremely seriously. Not only do they work solely with natural and organic ingredients and eschew any item on the Big List, they leave their products unboxed to reduce waste and ship in biodegradable corn-plastic bags. And when it came to choosing a breast cancer organization to receive 25% of sales for the month of October, the choice was equally unequivocal: Breast Cancer Action, which calls out companies who pinkwash and actually got General Mills committed to making their pink-lidded Yoplait without rGBH. Delivering amazing anti-aging results, Healing Anthropology's Rejuvenating Vitamin C Solution is just as serious.

TAKEYA LIMITED EDITION PINK GLASS WATER BOTTLE FOR LIVING BEYOND BREAST CANCER ?($19.99)Images courtesy of ecostiletto

So a water bottle is not exactly a beauty item—we get it. But with most experts we know continuing to rake us over the coals for not getting enough water each day to achieve actual beauty—as opposed to the dry-skinned, stinky-mouthed, sunken-eyed look that is de riguer at EcoStiletto central—we thought we'd throw in this pink-ribboned glass bottle with its sexy silicone jacket from Takeya, which donates 5% of all retail sales to Living Beyond Breast Cancer, a national non-profit that supports breast cancer survivors, through May 31st.  Drink more water. 'nuff said.
