Global luxury brand LVMH (Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton Inc.) and Parsons The New School for Design have teamed up to present "The Art of Craftsmanship Revisited" during New York Fashion Week. Student design teams will create and show original fashion ensembles, created in response to the work of local artisans and the tradition of "authenticity, creativity and craftsmanship that has long inspired and defined the luxury industry."
The runway show will be held at Milk Studios--where we saw Costello Tagliapietra premiere AirDye fabrics in the fall--during MAC & MILK Fashion Week (the downtown counterpart to Bryant Park--soon to be Lincoln Center) in New York City, February 17, 2010. A panel of judges will select the three winning teams, with additional events to follow in the spring.

Beranard Arnault, LVMH chairman and chief executive officer, speaks to the legacy of craftsmanship, below.

Beyond ephemeral fashions, it is the values of quality and durability which are forever attached to the Group's brands. The handicraft expertise of our products, their unique history and legacy, the truly iconic designs that distinguish our creations - all of these characteristics take on particular importance for us, as the leading luxury group, enforcing and perpetuating our solid values.

While we don't necessarily endorse the price tag attached to luxury goods (LVMH's revenue was €17.193 billion in 2008), we believe that items handcrafted by artisans are far better investments than off the rack, mass produced products. The key words here, are quality and durability.

Dean of Parsons, Joel Towers continues, below.

This extraordinary program gives our students the rare chance to learn from highly skilled artisans in their studios. The students will use this project to explore their creativity in a collaborative, cross-disciplinary environment, and will better understand the diversity of artisan professions, who contribute to the economic and artistic engines of New York.
