The Fraser River, in Western Canada, was once the spawning ground for 10.6 million sockeye salmon every summer. In 2009, this population saw a dramatic drop—down to fewer than one million salmon—that baffled scientists. It's just one example of how the world's great rivers are fragile, in spite of their awesome power.
