GE Squeezes Compact Fluorescent squeezed into Lightbulb form
Don't know how they did it, but GE has miniaturized the electronics that make compact fluorescents work and squeezed it down so that the full bulb has the shape of a conventional incandescent bulb. They say that it is good in any position, and the colour temperature was very close to incandescent. The shell covering the spiral probably gives some comfort to the Michele Bachmanns of the world who are so afraid of two milligrams of mercury.
''These fit in more lamps and fixtures than standard GE Spiral CFLs with the plastic base,'' says Kathy Sterio, General Manager of Consumer Marketing, GE Consumer & Industrial. ''Some people just want an incandescent bulb profile so they can easily use it with clip-on lampshades or smaller table lamps. Other people may see it as more aesthetically pleasing than corkscrew shaped CFLs in lamps or fixtures where the bulb is visible. It provides a more finished or tailored look that appeals to a lot of consumers.''
