The book isn't all about Gutenberg and movable type; there have been many revolutions in the industry that made the book cheap and popular. One of the most important was the development of the codex, the book made up of individual pages and wooden covers. The Romans were doing this in the first century AD. This was a huge advance over the scrolls they replaced, as it took up less space and you could open it to any point.
