Best Architect: Tom Kundig, Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects

There shouldn't be any such thing as "green architecture"--it should be built into every building and taken for granted. It should be standard operating procedure. Whenever we show the work of Tom Kundig, we are asked, "Why is this green?" I think it is when it does the right thing without hitting you over the head. With the Rolling Hut project in Mazama, WA, Tom Kundig takes a former RV campground, and designs a set of cabins on wheels that sit high enough so that the land can return to its natural state, and compared to a typical RV, remain "low-tech and low impact." Other works like his Delta Shelter and Montecito Residence use simple materials, natural ventilation, big overhangs for shading and basic technologies to produce tough and edgy designs.
