Green Fashion Exhibit at FIT Examines 200 Years of Clothing Manufacturing
Historically, hand-woven fabrics were valued and reusing and recycling techniques were acceptable as textiles were not considered disposable. The exhibit includes a man's suit made in 1960 from the reverse side of a paisley shawl.
Here, an evening dress in red rayon with rhinestones and beads made by the New York Dress Institute, was the culmination of a successful partnership between local manufacturers and the garment workers' union during World War II.
