While thistles may not be the most inviting flowers to unsuspecting human passersby, to a number of critters the thistle is likely a thing of beauty. Prickly, yes – but also a generous provider of nectar to a number of birds and butterflies ... and bees!

This delightful photo – look at the bee in mid-flight – was taken by photographer Bill Beard at the former Downsview Air Force base in suburban Toronto.
