TreeHugger visited a wild horse sanctuary, Return to Freedom, on the central coast of California to learn more about the issues facing the wild mustang. We wanted to learn more about this iconic part of America's history and landscape and find out about the pros and cons of free-roaming horses as well as the problems they are up against. Turns out, the situation is more dire than we ever expected.
Here, three bachelor stallions stand on a sunny hillside at the sanctuary. It is common for males without mares to form "bachelor bands."
