These photos were taken last November on the Antarctic Peninsula -- during the region's spring, when temperatures hover around a balmy 0C/32F (plus strong windchill).

TreeHugger was there as a guest of 2041, an organization devoted to preserving the Antarctic through the promotion of sustainable energy.

At Mikkelsen Harbour, Gentoo penguins are nesting on rocky outcroppings. Both parents share nesting duties, trading off to allow the other parent to feed.
