The Year of the Tiger - Beautiful Animals on the Brink
Tigers are one of the most critically endangered animals on the planet. And it's time to start saving them. Earlier this year, 13 Asian nations gathered for the first Ministerial Conference on Tiger Conservation; however, it ended on a low note. While the plan created during the meeting includes a commitment to double tiger populations by 2022, protect core habitats and buffer zones, maintain a permanent ban on the trade of tiger parts, and increase enforcement to discourage poaching, no new money was committed to tiger conservation.
As David DeFranza reported, "Countries agreed to maintain current contributions, coming mostly from ecotourism, carbon financing, and infrastructure project revenues, but lists no new financing for programs. Entering the conference, most scientists said that current funds would need to be doubled to be effective."
