The Secret Life of the Sun
Sunspots
For more than 4.5 billion years, the hydrogen reactions inside the sun have been providing light and heat to the solar system, while the size of the star -- it's big enough to contain 1.3 million planets the size of Earth -- provides enough gravity to keep the planets aligned.
The sun's atmosphere consists of three levels: the photosphere, the chromosphere, and the corona. The photosphere is home to sunspots (the bright sections seen here), which are magnetic fields -- created by gas movements inside the sun -- that appear two at a time, according to How Stuff Works.
