This butterfly gets its name from the Latin word fritillus, which means chessboard or dice box. According to the USDA Forest Service, there are 30 species of Fritillary butterflies, some of which are considered endangered. The adult butterflies feed on the nectar of many different flower types, like the milkweed seen here.
