The salt that helped create these arches was deposited some 300 million years ago when a sea flowed into the area then evaporated. Meanwhile, humans have inhabited the area only in the last 10,000 years, starting with the Fremont people and Ancient Pueblo People who lived here until around 700 years ago. The first European-American settlement wasn't founded until 1855 and prospectors settled in the surrounding areas in the 1880s. And over all this time, the arches have been forming and disintegrating, showing that the place is perpetually changing.
