One more admirable trait of the elephant seals is their resilience. Once heavily hunted for their blubber, which was made into oil, the northern elephant seals were driven to near extinction and the southern elephant seal populations were decimated by the end of the 1800s. Thanks to protections put forward in the early 1900s, the numbers have rebounded and the species is doing fine. That's a wonderful thing since it would be terrible to lose such an odd species with mind-blowing diving abilities.
