Taken from Anjaneya Hill, Hampi, India: Legend has it that Hampi was once the stomping grounds of mythical monkey kings; according to the locals, Hanuman the Hindu monkey god was born here. The curious piles of boulders were allegedly formed when the monkey armies clashed with one another, throwing huge rocks in battle. Historically, Hampi was one of the core centers of the Vijayanagara Empire, and boasts a number of impressive ruins -- it's now a UNESCO World Heritage site. A pretty magical place with lots of fascinating lore, great for bouldering and with plenty of temples and nature spots to explore.
