At the edges of the Sahara, fighting desertification has become a matter of survival. In Nigeria, for example, more than 1,355 square miles are engulfed by desert each year.

A project to build a "Great Green Wall" is currently underway. The hope is that this line of vegetation will help conserve water and break the advancing dunes.
