A truly ancient order, dragonflies, scientists know from the fossil record, have hovered and darted across the planet for at least several hundred million years. Their presence in the imagination runs deep as well.
In English, they have been known as the "devil's darning needle" and "ear cutter." In Romania, a folktale describes how a dragonfly was once a horse that befriended the devil. In Norwegian, their name translates to "eye poker" and in Portuguese, it's "eye snatcher."
