Hippeastrum bulbs are more commonly known as “amaryllis” and these bulbs are native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. Around Christmas they’re regularly sold in kits. Kits include: a pot, a bulb that's ready to flower and some kind of growing medium (usually compressed cocoa coir).
‘Red Lion,’ ‘Minerva,’ and ‘Apple Blossom’ are the three varieties you’ll regularly find sold in these kits. Amaryllis kits can be found this time of year at independent garden centers, big box retailers and home improvement stores. Even the floral department of larger grocery stores stock them this time of year.
Prices vary from one retailer to another, but I would not pay more than $10 for a kit featuring one of the aforementioned varieties.
