Lighting has advanced in theory, but in practice, it isn't easy to find fixtures that suit taste, wallet, and green sensibilities. LED lights have excellent promise -- they have no filament that will burn out and contain no mercury or other toxic substances. And they last long!

The Corbett Lighting Tango light shown here is a good-looking LED fixture -- still a rarity! -- made from laser-cut metal formed into a seamless sphere with a concealed, high-performance LED light. Small version $790.

One other option -- with a completely different feel -- would be Troy Lighting's Raleigh.
