Expensive chemicals are needed to keep the weeds down. But it is cheaper than the alternatives; it takes $6 of chemicals to keep weeds out of a hectare of cacao; we are told that it would take $45 in labour to pick them out by hand.

So it isn't easy to convince a farmer to go straight from conventional farming to organic; there is a gradual transition, substituting green chemicals for red.
