Best Winery: Sokol Blosser Winery

Following the principles of The Natural Step, Oregon's Sokol Blosser Winery incorporates green practices in every aspect of production. From the USDA organic and Salmon Safe-certified estate vineyards, to the biodiesel used in vineyard tractors and 25kW solar power system providing 30 percent of the winery's energy (with plans to expand that to 75 percent), to the LEED-certified underground cellar (the first U.S. winery with a LEED-certified green building), the family-run winery that started growing grapes in 1971 will continue to aim high when it comes to green practices; they'll begin reporting their greenhouse gas emissions to The Climate Registry during 2009 in an effort to begin efforts to reduce, and eventually neutralize, the winery's carbon emissions. --CD
