Winter is also the prime time to eat seafood in Istanbul, and Black Sea hamsi (a small fish akin to the anchovy), uskumru (mackerel), and midye (mussels) are particularly popular, and sustainable, choices. In my neighborhood, the Karaköy fish market along the shores of the Golden Horn is the place to buy seafood -- perhaps after tucking into a bowl of fish soup at one of the nearby outdoor cafes.

Hamsi, mackerel, and mussels are all often served fried. For a healthier alternative, try stuffed mackerel or baked hamsi.

Why Eat Them?
Oily fish like anchovy and mackerel are especially good sources of beneficial omega-3 fatty acids.
