Choosing to bike instead of drive trips shorter than two miles is great for the environment -- and even better for you or your lucky recipient's health, since it slips in a little extra cardio that is barely noticed.

But if you can't afford to give your favorite just-moved-to-the-city niece or nephew a bike, sign him or her up for a bike share instead (they already exist in Washington, D.C., Chicago, Boston, and Denver; New York and San Francisco have shares in the works).

For a small annual fee -- usually under $100 -- you'll give access to hundreds of bikes located throughout the city of your choice, making it easy to hop on, hop off, and save a bundle on car insurance and maintenance. (Bike Sharing Membership, prices vary)
