Robot Butterfly

2 of 11

This robot butterfly is a great example of using unique insects as inspiration for small flying robots. Researchers successfully built and flew a flapping-wing-powered swallowtail butterfly, which could have big implications for the field of aerodynamics. The wings of the Swallowtail are exceptionally large in proportion to their bodies, which makes them able to flap at a lower speed than most butterflies, making them ideal candidates for a robotic mimic. Though, whether this is flying rather than slowly falling while flapping is up for debate.
