Oceanic Society, which sponsored a portion of my trip, knows how to get us out to Midway in style! We chartered a new 18-passenger jet, which cut the travel time down from nearly five hours in the old plane to about three hours. I must admit that while the luxury part wasn't expected, it was appreciated especially for the feeling of safety. It was also short-lived -- once you arrive on Midway, it's back to basics. After all, this is a wildlife refuge and not a resort. Flights only go in and out of Midway at night during nesting season to avoid airstrikes, and there are only a couple flights a week to get people, supplies, and mail in and out of the atoll.
