It was the hand pressing into Proserpina's thigh that was so arresting, in Bernini's 1621 sculpture, carved when he was all of 23 years old. We talk about the wonders of digital scanning and 3D printing and all of the new technologies available to us today but I have never, in all my life, seen the virtual made so real, carved out of marble almost four hundred years ago. From the Rape of Proserpina, in the Galleria Borghese in Rome.
