Born in 1865 (to 1932), he started his work as a sculptor and painter. Becoming obsessed with plants, he documented over 6,000 before being hired as a teacher at the Kunstgewerbeschule (Royal Museum of Arts and Crafts) in Berlin. For over 30 years he was an assistant professor and later professor of plant drawing and modeling.
