I think Earth Day matters as much as ever. It would be easy for environmental writers to be jaded and skeptical about Earth Day, but I think a more productive way to think about it is to try to take advantage of the time of the year when more eyes and ears are turned our way, and more people are open to environmental issues and messages. I am cautiously optimistic about rising awareness. Yes there are more people on the planet, consuming more resources than ever, but there does seem to be a lot to be hopeful for as well. I think Earth Day was a brilliant idea, and I think it continues to have a positive impact, especially with children, who respond well to the symbolism of holidays and broad support for common goals like clean air and water.
